CLEAN RIVER, HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

Welcome to the Muddy Water Initiative. We are a direct action, advocacy and educational clearinghouse for Boston’s Muddy River.

Environmentalists, stakeholders, and stewards of the Muddy River, we pilot low-cost, community accessible, climate-resilient projects that keep our River clean and our communities healthy. By working for the health of our urban waterways, we honor the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted and his visionary design of a sparkling Emerald Necklace.

Muddy River Oil Leak Updates
Thanks to our volunteers for reporting on the ongoing situation in the Muddy River, where a reported heating oil leak has contaminated the waterway and impacted dozens of animals. We have vowed to work with our public partners in Boston and Brookline and assist in cleanup efforts however we can. If and when the oil comes downriver beyond the official cleanup site, we have a volunteer team ready to go with expert leadership in oil clean up to lead us. Thank you for being ready to act!!

While the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection continues its investigation into the leak, it urges residents not to try approaching or capturing affected animals; rather, they should call in reports of oil-covered wildlife to the New England Wildlife Center hotline at 508-362-0111 so trained professionals can capture and clean them.

The Charlesgate Farmers Market opened June 23rd on the Banks of the Muddy at Charlesgate! With a number of environmental popups (Beyond Plastics, CRWA, etc.) we brought attention to the river and worked on making our footways more sustainable to help our environment. Stayed tuned for news about next year.

Volunteer with us to clean the River! See our Volunteer Tab on this site! New opportunities available!
